you who have drained to its dregs(D)

An Army of Locusts

Blow the trumpet(A) in Zion;(B)
    sound the alarm on my holy hill.(C)

Let all who live in the land tremble,
    for the day of the Lord(D) is coming.
It is close at hand(E)
    a day of darkness(F) and gloom,(G)
    a day of clouds(H) and blackness.(I)
Like dawn spreading across the mountains
    a large and mighty army(J) comes,
such as never was in ancient times(K)
    nor ever will be in ages to come.

Before them fire(L) devours,
    behind them a flame blazes.
Before them the land is like the garden of Eden,(M)
    behind them, a desert waste(N)
    nothing escapes them.
They have the appearance of horses;(O)
    they gallop along like cavalry.
With a noise like that of chariots(P)
    they leap over the mountaintops,
like a crackling fire(Q) consuming stubble,
    like a mighty army drawn up for battle.

At the sight of them, nations are in anguish;(R)
    every face turns pale.(S)
They charge like warriors;(T)
    they scale walls like soldiers.
They all march in line,(U)
    not swerving(V) from their course.
They do not jostle each other;
    each marches straight ahead.
They plunge through defenses
    without breaking ranks.
They rush upon the city;
    they run along the wall.
They climb into the houses;(W)
    like thieves they enter through the windows.(X)

10 Before them the earth shakes,(Y)
    the heavens tremble,(Z)
the sun and moon are darkened,(AA)
    and the stars no longer shine.(AB)
11 The Lord(AC) thunders(AD)
    at the head of his army;(AE)
his forces are beyond number,
    and mighty is the army that obeys his command.
The day of the Lord is great;(AF)
    it is dreadful.
    Who can endure it?(AG)

Rend Your Heart

12 “Even now,” declares the Lord,
    “return(AH) to me with all your heart,(AI)
    with fasting and weeping and mourning.”

13 Rend your heart(AJ)
    and not your garments.(AK)
Return(AL) to the Lord your God,
    for he is gracious and compassionate,(AM)
slow to anger and abounding in love,(AN)
    and he relents from sending calamity.(AO)
14 Who knows? He may turn(AP) and relent(AQ)
    and leave behind a blessing(AR)
grain offerings and drink offerings(AS)
    for the Lord your God.

15 Blow the trumpet(AT) in Zion,(AU)
    declare a holy fast,(AV)
    call a sacred assembly.(AW)

16 Gather the people,
    consecrate(A) the assembly;
bring together the elders,(B)
    gather the children,
    those nursing at the breast.
Let the bridegroom(C) leave his room
    and the bride her chamber.
17 Let the priests, who minister(D) before the Lord,
    weep(E) between the portico and the altar.(F)
Let them say, “Spare your people, Lord.
    Do not make your inheritance an object of scorn,(G)
    a byword(H) among the nations.
Why should they say among the peoples,
    ‘Where is their God?(I)’”

The Lord’s Answer

18 Then the Lord was jealous(J) for his land
    and took pity(K) on his people.

19 The Lord replied[a] to them:

“I am sending you grain, new wine(L) and olive oil,(M)
    enough to satisfy you fully;(N)
never again will I make you
    an object of scorn(O) to the nations.

20 “I will drive the northern horde(P) far from you,
    pushing it into a parched and barren land;
its eastern ranks will drown in the Dead Sea
    and its western ranks in the Mediterranean Sea.
And its stench(Q) will go up;
    its smell will rise.”

Surely he has done great things!
21     Do not be afraid,(R) land of Judah;
    be glad and rejoice.(S)
Surely the Lord has done great things!(T)
22     Do not be afraid, you wild animals,
    for the pastures in the wilderness are becoming green.(U)
The trees are bearing their fruit;
    the fig tree(V) and the vine(W) yield their riches.(X)
23 Be glad, people of Zion,
    rejoice(Y) in the Lord your God,
for he has given you the autumn rains
    because he is faithful.(Z)
He sends you abundant showers,(AA)
    both autumn(AB) and spring rains,(AC) as before.
24 The threshing floors will be filled with grain;
    the vats will overflow(AD) with new wine(AE) and oil.

25 “I will repay you for the years the locusts(AF) have eaten(AG)
    the great locust and the young locust,
    the other locusts and the locust swarm[b]
my great army(AH) that I sent among you.
26 You will have plenty to eat, until you are full,(AI)
    and you will praise(AJ) the name of the Lord your God,
    who has worked wonders(AK) for you;
never again will my people be shamed.(AL)
27 Then you will know(AM) that I am in Israel,
    that I am the Lord(AN) your God,
    and that there is no other;
never again will my people be shamed.(AO)

The Day of the Lord

28 “And afterward,
    I will pour out my Spirit(AP) on all people.(AQ)
Your sons and daughters will prophesy,(AR)
    your old men will dream dreams,(AS)
    your young men will see visions.
29 Even on my servants,(AT) both men and women,
    I will pour out my Spirit in those days.(AU)
30 I will show wonders in the heavens(AV)
    and on the earth,(AW)
    blood and fire and billows of smoke.
31 The sun will be turned to darkness(AX)
    and the moon to blood
    before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the Lord.(AY)

Judgment and Covenant Renewal

[a]“Surely the day is coming;(A) it will burn like a furnace.(B) All the arrogant(C) and every evildoer will be stubble,(D) and the day that is coming will set them on fire,(E)” says the Lord Almighty. “Not a root or a branch(F) will be left to them. But for you who revere my name,(G) the sun of righteousness(H) will rise with healing(I) in its rays. And you will go out and frolic(J) like well-fed calves. Then you will trample(K) on the wicked; they will be ashes(L) under the soles of your feet on the day when I act,” says the Lord Almighty.

The Day of the Lord

Now, brothers and sisters, about times and dates(A) we do not need to write to you,(B) for you know very well that the day of the Lord(C) will come like a thief in the night.(D)

The Day of the Lord

Dear friends,(A) this is now my second letter to you. I have written both of them as reminders(B) to stimulate you to wholesome thinking. I want you to recall the words spoken in the past by the holy prophets(C) and the command given by our Lord and Savior through your apostles.(D)

Above all, you must understand that in the last days(E) scoffers will come, scoffing and following their own evil desires.(F) They will say, “Where is this ‘coming’ he promised?(G) Ever since our ancestors died, everything goes on as it has since the beginning of creation.”(H) But they deliberately forget that long ago by God’s word(I) the heavens came into being and the earth was formed out of water and by water.(J) By these waters also the world of that time(K) was deluged and destroyed.(L) By the same word the present heavens and earth are reserved for fire,(M) being kept for the day of judgment(N) and destruction of the ungodly.

But do not forget this one thing, dear friends: With the Lord a day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years are like a day.(O) The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise,(P) as some understand slowness. Instead he is patient(Q) with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.(R)

10 But the day of the Lord will come like a thief.(S) The heavens will disappear with a roar;(T) the elements will be destroyed by fire,(U) and the earth and everything done in it will be laid bare.[a](V)
